Truck-in-a-Box

The popularity of robust and easily maintained narrow gauge prototypes in various gauges is well known. The 5” Gauge ‘Sweet Pea’ and other freelance types can be seen at many events as well as giving pleasure too many on private tracks at home. The same can be said for more prototypical types such as Hunslets, Bagnall etc. To compliment locomotives in this category PNP Railways have introduced a range of narrow gauge wagons of various guises.

Truck-in-a-Box™ will compliment most 5" gauge narrow gauge locomotives whether steam electric or internal combustion outline. They are available in various guises including tipper, tank, and coal or slate truck. The cargo bodies can be changed easily between the common chassis and separate bodies can be purchased. Truck-in-a-Box™ is of very sturdy construction and incorporates many of the strong unitised features, which can be found in the similar PNP range designed for 7
¼" gauge. The wagons come fully assembled and ready to run and are painted in grey or red oxide. The wheel, axles and pedestal bearings are available to purchase separately

Pedestal Bearings

These pedestals are especially suitable for use on slate wagons and the many derivatives of this famous narrow gauge standard. They look equally at home on tippers and are also a standard part of the PNP Railways Truck-in-a-Box range.

The pedestals are nicely detailed with square headed bolts and an oil hole cover, they are moulded in acetal copolymer and incorporate a sliding top half to the main bearing, which rests on two sturdy concealed springs giving a smooth running sprung axle box, something the full size ones did not always benefit from. The pedestals can be fitted easily either with the two steel bolts provided or by wood screws if used on a wooden chassis. The mouldings are supplied in either black or rust.

The pedestals are designed to fit a chassis member of 20 mm wide by 25 to 40 mm deep, and a between chassis side member measurement of 170 mm. They have been designed to be used in conjunction with 11mm outside diameter polished axles, with a journal length of 44 mm from the inside (back) of the wheel, assuming back to back measurement is 119 mm. The ends of the axles should not have more than 1 to 1.5 mm end clearance, 2 to 3 mm total. The clearance must be no more than stated or the top-bearing shoe could move out of the pedestal body.

Please note, that this item is not suitable for passenger carrying vehicles.
