The suspension unit is based around a 12mm thick laser cut, a take up bearing kept captive by a keep and a coil spring hidden behind an aluminium casting, which represents the axle boxes used when the Southern Railway took control of the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway. These being only slightly different from the originals the dummy leaf springs attached to these boxes move up and down giving the illusion of working components. The working ball race moves in the W iron behind the leaf spring and axle box casting. The illusion of the leaf spring working is enhanced on the finished model because the leaf spring eyes are hidden behind open bottomed shackles on the chassis, thus allowing rising and falling motion to take place
