The Low Profile Point Lever is a simple point/turnout/switch operating mechanism, which has all the components at rail level. As a safety feature there is no lever sticking up to trip over or fall onto. The operating lever is easily moved by hand or by the aid of a strategically placed boot toe. Additionally a tension spring may be added in order to hold the blades in one facing direction, but enabling them to be trailed through in either direction. Also it will be possible to remotely control the operation by wire or rod by pulling against the tension spring though this has not yet been tried.
Ivan Smith originally designed the mechanism for use on his Stockholes Farm Miniature (7¼") Gauge railways at Belton near Doncaster. It has been further developed and drawn up by Peter Wood and has now become the standard for that railway, all previous mechanisms having been replaced. The drawings include instructions on amending the proportions for different throw or sleeper spacing.
It is now available either as a kit of parts or a set of drawings;
