The vacuum release valve is employed to allow atmospheric air pressure into the vacuum reservoir if the vacuum brakes are still applied on a detached vehicle, which has to be moved, pulling the ring activates it. The brakes will come off, as the air pressure equalizes each side of the diaphragm. Before this device is used it should be established that the vehicle in question cannot roll out of control.
