The Society is established for the purpose of promoting 7¼" and 7½" gauge railways, in particular to meet for rallies, publish a magazine, improve liaison with the trade and to undertake such activities as may from time to time be incidental and conducive to the attainment thereof.

Federation of Model Engineering Societies
We provide support for affiliated Model Engineering Societies (‘clubs’) across the length and breadth of the UK . We act on behalf of members in co-ordinating responses to important issues facing the hobby of Model Engineering including safety and legislation. We also promote the hobby through news, events and competitions and provide advice and guides for good practice in club activities.

The Northern Association of Model Engineers
The Northern Association of Model Engineers is an association of clubs rather than individuals. It was formed in 1945 to “promote, encourage, develop and organise the model engineering movement in the north of England”. Its brief goes some way beyond that these days. Geographical coverage extends from the south of England to the Scottish highlands and into Wales and Ulster, and as well as promoting and encouraging the hobby we are increasingly having to protect it from potentially damaging legislation in which it is caught under the law of unintended consequences. The Association is represented on the British Model Engineering Liaison Group which discusses these matters with government departments and the insurance companies

What is a "Minor Railway"? As far as this Website and the book Minor Railways is concerned a "Minor Railway" is a Standard Gauge Railway, Narrow Gauge Railway, Miniature Railway (7¼" gauge or greater & ground level), Tramway or Cliff Railway - which offers rides to the general public and is operated mainly for leisure purposes. The range of such railways is enormous - from the Severn Valley Railway and the Ffestiniog Railway, to railways in theme parks, garden centres, zoos and small circuits of track operated by local a Model Engineering Society. It is true to say the range of "Minor Railways" is so wide, that the only thing they have in common are wheels running on rails!
