How PNP Railways Helped Crowborough Miniature Railway Double in Size

At PNP Railways, we pride ourselves in providing top-quality components that help miniature railways throughout the UK and beyond thrive. One of our recent success stories comes from the Crowborough Miniature Railway, where our products have played a crucial role in a significant transformation and expansion of the club's track.

Established in 1989, the Crowborough Miniature Railway has been a cherished attraction for railway enthusiasts and the local community. The original oval track at Crowborough, enhanced in 2004 with a boating lake at its centre, had already been upgraded using PNP’s rail, chairs, self-tapping screws, and plastic sleepers. These components were chosen for their durability and ease of maintenance, offering a long-term solution that minimised the need for frequent repairs.

The Challenge: Expanding the 5" & 3½" Gauge Raised Track

The plan to expand the track took a significant leap forward when the club approached the owner of the adjoining field to see if they would sell a slice of their field. Obtaining this slice would allow the club to double the length of the track. This was back in 2015, and after much anticipation, planning permission was granted, and the club embarked on a four-year project to lay the foundations and build the track extension.

The extension was constructed using the PNP track, featuring Clip Fit Chairs, 5" & 3½" Gauge Plastic Sleepers and 5/8" x 5/8" Aluminium Rail. This modern upgrade not only extends the length of the railway but also enhances the quality and safety of the ride.

The Finished Result: A Modern Railway with Historical Charm

The complete overhaul of the original track, combined with the extensive new section, has significantly enhanced the railway’s capacity and operational efficiency. The modern PNP components have provided a reliable and low-maintenance infrastructure, allowing members to focus more on the visitor experience, having fun and less on repairs and maintenance.

In addition to the track upgrades, Crowborough Miniature Railway replaced its six-passenger carriages and drivers' trolleys, further improving the comfort and safety of its operations. A generous donation from one of the railway’s founding members allowed the installation of a modern signalling system, which has streamlined operations and enhanced safety alongside a new PA system.

At PNP Railways, we are proud to have been part of Crowborough Miniature Railway’s journey. Our components are the reliable, durable solution to bring their ambitious plans to life. The success of this project is a testament to the quality of our products and the commitment of the Crowborough team to preserving and enhancing their railway for future generations.

We look forward to continuing our partnership with Crowborough Miniature Railway and supporting other miniature railways with the high-quality components they need to succeed.
